The tropical seabass Lates calcarifer was introduced in Tahiti in 1984 and then was domesticated without other introduction. Three successive generations have been obtained in captivity. Tissue samples of the 38 animaIs which represent the total Tahitian broodstock were preserved in alcohol to be genotyped with four microsatellite markers (Yue et al., 2001). Three of four described markers were successfully transferred to the laboratory of genetics of Tahiti (marker LcaM01, LcaM02, LcaM03), as the revelation technology available locally did not allow the use of LcaM04 in routine. The results show that the genetic diversity of the tahitian broodstock is not equivalent of the one of the species, which could be explained by the small size of the founder... |

Asian seabass (<i>Lates calcarifer</i>) larvae were fed <i>Brachionus</i> cultured on <i>Chlorella</i> and, as soon as ingestion was possible, different types of <i>Artemia</i> , i.e., nauplii of the San Francisco Bay (SFB) strain, Great Salt Lake (GSL) strain or GSL nauplii that had been bioencapsulated with an emulsion containing high levels of the omega3-HUFAs (highly unsaturated fatty acids) 20:5 and 22:6. San Francisco Bay <i>Artemia</i> with a good natural fatty acid profile and small body size could be offered earlier than the larger but HUFA-poor Great Salt Lake strain. Lates calcarifer, a species originated from Southeast Asia and Australia. Was selected among several tropical finfish species because its particular ability for aquaculture. Nine years of research led to a rearing technology adapted to the environmental and socio-economical conditions of French Polynesia. This report is a synthesis of the works that resulted in the control of the whole rearing cycle. A captive broodstock was necessary when using such an introduced species. This fish, a protandrous hermaphrodite, presents a spawning seasonality. A broodstock conditionning facility was designed to get mature spawners throughout the year. Innovative techniques opened new perspectives in the larviculture or the Asian seabass in the 1980s. Induced spawning maximized egg production while sperm preservation reduced the problem of male brood-stock supply. Studies of biometric characteristics of the fish larvae resulted in improved feeding strategies with live food. This in turn permitted a more rational use of expensive <i>Artemia</i> nauplii. Nutritional enhancement of the highly unsaturated fatty acid (HUFA) composition of the life food resulted in significant improvement of survival and physiological condition of the larvae of the metamorphosis. Lates calcarifer is distributed widely in northern Australia and is important to both commercial and recreational fisheries. There is the research on hatchery production of the species in 1984 and this work is continuing. Hatchery reared fish have been stocked to reservoirs in northern Queensland and have been used in experimental grow-out trials. Fish weaned onto formulated diets by the age of 25 days were reared to marketable size (> 500 g) in freshwater tanks. Despite suboptimal water temperatures the fish reached market size by the age of twelve months. Taste panel analysis showed that the pellet fed fish were of good quality. The sensitivity of growth rates to water temperature was demonstrated in both grow-out trials and reservoir stockings. |
